Big Ku Lodge is among Alaska’s most unique and strategically located trophy rainbow lodges. Perched on a bluff overlooking a stunning landscape of alpine tundra and Lake Kukaklek, Big Ku guests enjoy easy walking access to some of the best trophy rainbow water in the world, as well as three additional systems all accessed by jet boat.

With only six guests per week, this intimate lodge offers a focused and personalized experience for anglers looking to escape the crowds and fish one of the most powerful trout rivers in Alaska.

Most guests fly into Anchorage and overnight before our 11 a.m. charger flight to Big Ku. We recommend either Lakefront Anchorage Hotel or the Captain Cook.

The 90-minute charter in a Cessna Caravan will have you at the Big Ku dock at 12:30PM. After meeting the staff, assigned a cabin you are free to roam and fish if you like.

Big Ku Lodge has the enviable ability to reach four of the Katmai region’s top trophy trout streams by boat! The advantages this gives the hardcore angler are many, including the option to reach the best water in almost any weather; a price which is significantly less than the surrounding fly out lodges, and a section of home water which ranks among the best trophy trout beats in all of Alaska.

This program enables great after-hours fishing, the ability to reach some famous local waters first, and the ability to add on spur of the moment fly outs that are paid for on site. This is a “rainbow only” lodge, (we do not target salmon) with lots of fish in the 3-6 pound range as well as specimens that can top ten pounds.

The Big Ku is at or near the top of every Alaska well informed angler’s list, with good numbers of 4-8 pound fish lying in its many shallow runs and riffles. It is, in particular, a superb streamer fishery, and literally only a stone’s throw from the front porch of the lodge. With long days, this is a great piece of water that you can walk and wade unguided after dinner.

Big Ku Lodge uses open john boats or a large, covered-cabin inboard jet boat to ferry guests in comfort to any one of the available local streams (other than of course, the home water). The ride to most of the rivers is short, and your arrival often finds you first on the water. Having arrived to the stream of choice, you will either use a smaller jet boat to access the best water, or simply walk and wade, depending on the circumstances.

Big Ku Lodge is managed and maintained by a full time live in, on-site staff of five, who are available 24-7. Guest cabins are double occupancy, each have full, private bathrooms, heat, linens, and generator powered electricity.  The cabins overlook the river and lake, with a background of snow-capped mountains.  Wildlife frequents the area, typically right outside your windows.

Your hosts will ensure a clean and comfortable stay while providing delicious house made meals. Your guides will accompany you on all outdoor adventures, ensuring your safety and providing detailed knowledge of the area and activities available.

Meals at Big Ku are delicious, hearty, and prepared fresh daily by your hosts. Hot and cold breakfasts will be waiting for you each morning; lunches will normally be taken in the field; and dinners are served family style with the whole group.  Coffee, tea, soft drinks, water, and a glass of beer or wine are available as desired.

We happily accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions.
