Peacock Bass, Payara, Surubi
Five Fishing Days
January, February, March, December
Colombia peacock bass fishing is an adventure like no other, offering a legitimate chance for trophy fish in a thrilling jungle setting and an extremely hospitable travel experience. Trek’s new Colombia peacock fishing program was developed and is operated by Erik Von Sneidern, one of the most respected outfitters on the planet.
It would be no stretch to say Von Sneidern knows more than anyone about Colombia peacock bass fishing. Both Trek International Safaris and the Von Sneidern family were pioneers in establishing wingshooting and peacock bass fishing operations in Colombia during the early 1970’s, and our partnership together has endured for nearly five decades.
Travel time to Colombia is relatively very easy with direct flights from the U.S. to Bogota in the three- to four-hour range. A Trek partner representative will meet you at the Bogota airport and accompany you to the Citè Hotel, where you can walk to any number of excellent local restaurants, as well as enjoy Bogotá’s vibrant nightlife.
The following morning, you will catch a one-hour flight to Inirida, where you will be met again by a Trek partner representative to assist you with your luggage and accompany you to the city’s port. From there, you will board a comfortable boat shuttle, stocked with beer and water, for an approximately three-hour trek upriver to the camp.
Erik will greet your group each morning, joining you for a hearty breakfast and seeing you off for a day of thrilling peacock bass fishing. Around mid morning Erik will jump in a boat and check on each pair of fishermen bringing beverages and fresh fruit.
You’ll be back to camp around noon for a tasty lunch and siesta. Once refreshed, you’ll be off to again chase peacocks, returning back to the lodge before dark.
At dinner, you will enjoy excellent meals of local beef, chicken and fish, while being regaled with tales from Von Sneidern, who is an epic storyteller. Beer and wine is provided in your trip fee, but feel free to pack a bottle of your favorite libation.
Landing a 20 lbs. peacock bass is among the most prized achievements in international angling. During the 2021-22 season, our groups landed 18 peacocks over 20 lbs. and 64 over 15 lbs.
The mainstream perception of Colombia is misaligned with the current reality in the country. For the past decade, the Colombian government’s commitment to cleaning up the country has greatly stabilized the travel environment. Von Sneidern’s extensive experience in Colombia, as well as his meticulous planning resulted in an operation that is extremely streamlined and protective of your safety.
We have established agreements with both the Colombian government and the Bachako tribe of indigenous Colombians, granting exclusive rights to fish a large section of the Inirida river and lagoons. The exceedingly hospitable members of the Bachako community serve as lodge staff and your fishing guides.
The Inírida River is the main southern tributary in the Colombian portion of the Orinoco River with a length of 1,419 km. The river originates in the low plain forests of the transitional Amazon biome and is characterized primarily by rainforests and flooded forests.
The boats we use were designed by Von Sneidern and built in Inirida. At 10-meters long, the boats are highly stable, providing two anglers with plenty of room to make long-range casts and minimize the chaos of double hookups.
This is not a big numbers river, but rather a big fish river. Peacock bass fishing requires maximum effort from the angler. You will throw magnum-sized plugs to elicit the anger of big peacock bass, the legendary explosion of their strike and their line-melting runs.
The camp is comprised of eight very comfortable tents, covered by thatched roofs. The beds are comfortable and each tent has a fan to keep you cool, as well as a light and outlet for charging electronics. Laundry service is provided each day, allowing you to pack light.
