In the heart of Argentina’s legendary northern Patagonia lies one of the world’s most remarkable trout fisheries — the Middle Limay River. Flowing through a dramatic landscape of volcanic cliffs, endless steppe and crystal-clear channels, the Limay is a tailwater system famous for producing exceptional brown and rainbow trout.
Trek Safaris’ partner in this angler’s paradise, Limay River Lodge, grants our clients privileged access to miles of secluded, productive water. The Limay offers everything a passionate fly fisherman dreams about — aggressive dry-fly eats, powerful resident rainbows, beautiful brown trout and the opportunity to encounter true giants. Each season, migratory browns enter the system, creating legitimate opportunities at trout exceeding 30 inches.
With consistent flows, diverse water, expert guides and luxury accommodations in the Patagonian wilderness, Limay River Lodge delivers one of South America’s premier fly-fishing experiences.
The Trip
The journey begins with international arrival into Buenos Aires, Argentina, followed by a domestic flight into Patagonia. Guests typically arrive through San Martín de los Andes, where they are met by a Trek Safaris partner representative and transferred through the spectacular Patagonian landscape to Limay River Lodge.
Once at the lodge, the logistics become effortless. Each day is customized based on river conditions, fish movement and angler preference. The Limay’s vast network of channels, riffles, pools and runs allows guests to fish multiple days without repeating water, exploring new sections of this world-class river throughout their stay.
Professional Argentine guides lead each day on the water using comfortable drift boats combined with strategic walk-and-wade opportunities. Whether throwing dry flies to rising trout, working streamers for aggressive browns or hunting the legendary migratory fish that make the Limay famous, every day brings a new adventure.
For anglers looking to experience even more of Argentina, Limay River Lodge combines perfectly with other iconic Patagonia trout programs or a high-volume Cordoba wingshooting adventure for the ultimate cast-and-blast itinerary.
The Experience
The Limay River is a rare combination of beauty, productivity and trophy potential. Unlike many remote trout destinations where anglers sacrifice comfort for quality fishing, Limay River Lodge delivers both.
The river’s cold, nutrient-rich water supports a thriving ecosystem and produces exceptionally strong fish. Resident rainbows and browns provide consistent action, while the arrival of migratory brown trout transforms the Limay into one of the most exciting trophy trout fisheries in the world.
The diversity of the water keeps every angler engaged. Long gravel flats, braided channels, deep pools and dramatic cliff-lined stretches create endless opportunities and constantly changing challenges. Guests can enjoy classic dry-fly fishing, technical presentations, streamer fishing and unforgettable battles with some of Patagonia’s largest trout.
Days end the way they should in Argentina — with great stories, exceptional cuisine, world-class wines and the warm hospitality that makes Patagonia such a special destination.
The Accommodations
Set along the banks of the Middle Limay River, Limay River Lodge blends refined comfort with a spectacular wilderness setting.
The lodge features spacious double-occupancy guest rooms with private ensuite bathrooms, comfortable gathering areas and inviting indoor and outdoor spaces designed for relaxing after a full day on the river.
The heart of the lodge experience is the camaraderie shared each evening — cocktails around the courtyard firepit, conversations about the day’s best fish and chef-prepared meals showcasing Argentine hospitality.
From attentive staff and experienced guides to fine dining and peaceful Patagonian surroundings, Limay River Lodge provides the perfect balance of adventure and comfort — a true bucket-list destination for serious trout anglers.
