There are only a handful of trout rivers in the world that have achieved true legendary status among fly anglers — and Montana’s Madison River sits firmly at the top of that list. Set on more than 1,200 private acres with exclusive Madison River frontage near the famed Varney Bridge, Madison Double R Lodge delivers an elevated Western fly fishing experience centered around world-class trout water, luxury accommodations, and authentic Montana hospitality.
Located in the heart of Montana’s Madison Valley near Ennis, Madison Double R combines easy access to some of the finest trout fisheries in the American West with refined lodging, exceptional dining, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels distinctly Montana. Whether you’re floating the iconic “50-Mile Riffle,” stalking rising trout on technical dry fly water, or exploring Yellowstone’s legendary fisheries, every day offers a new chapter in one of fly fishing’s most storied destinations.
The Madison Valley delivers the kind of scenery anglers dream about — rolling ranchland, snowcapped peaks, winding rivers, abundant wildlife, and endless big sky sunsets. Located just south of Ennis and within striking distance of Yellowstone National Park, Madison Double R offers far more than simply great fishing.
Non-angling activities can include Yellowstone National Park excursions, horseback riding, hiking, wildlife viewing, shopping and dining in Ennis and peaceful, relaxing afternoons at the lodge
For couples, groups, and families looking to combine exceptional fishing with an authentic Western escape, Madison Double R delivers one of the finest lodge experiences in Montana.
The Trip
Madison Double R is easily accessed via Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, followed by a scenic drive into the Madison Valley. Typical stays range from three to five nights with guided fishing included daily. Packages are all-inclusive, covering lodging, meals, guided fishing, beverages and use of fishing equipment, with airport transfers, licenses and gratuities typically separate.
The Experience
Madison Double R is positioned in the center of one of the most diverse and productive trout fisheries in North America. The lodge’s private access to the Madison River places anglers directly on some of the river’s most consistent and productive water, with opportunities to target strong populations of wild brown and rainbow trout throughout the season.
Guided fishing programs focus on a wide range of nearby fisheries including:
- The Madison River
- Yellowstone National Park waters
- Hebgen Lake
- Quake Lake
- The Jefferson River
- The Yellowstone River
- Small mountain creeks and spring-fed tributaries
The Madison itself is famous for its endless riffles, prolific hatches, aggressive trout, and classic drift boat fishing. Depending on the season, anglers can expect outstanding dry fly fishing, nymphing, streamer action, and technical sight fishing opportunities.
Experienced guides tailor each day to conditions, angler ability, and personal goals, creating an experience equally rewarding for seasoned fly fishermen and first-time anglers alike.
The Accommodations
Madison Double R blends refined comfort with a relaxed Western atmosphere. Originally part of a historic cattle ranch, the property still carries the authentic feel of Montana ranch country while delivering the amenities and service expected from a premier fly fishing destination.
The lodge accommodations are thoughtfully designed to provide privacy, comfort, and panoramic views of the Madison Valley. After a day on the water, guests return to outstanding cuisine, carefully selected wines, and inviting gathering spaces that encourage storytelling and camaraderie.
Owners John and Krista Sampson bring decades of experience in Montana’s fly fishing and hospitality world, creating a lodge atmosphere that is polished without ever feeling pretentious.
Madison Double R represents the best of modern Montana fly fishing lodges: elite trout water, experienced guides, luxury accommodations, exceptional food, and an atmosphere that remains grounded in the authentic spirit of the American West.
For anglers searching for classic Western trout fishing paired with elevated hospitality, few destinations capture the experience quite like Madison Double R Lodge.
