Few places in Alaska match the mystique and exclusivity of Royal Wolf Lodge. Located in the heart of Katmai’s best trout country, this fly-out-only program caters to experienced anglers seeking technical fishing and high-volume action.
Royal Wolf’s proximity to world famous trout streams such as the Nonvianuk, Big Ku, Little Ku, American Creek, Brooks, Moraine, Battle, and other secret spots sets this program apart from others. Think sight-fishing to 28” ‘bows in gin-clear streams by day and relaxing in the wild and stunning Alaskan paradise each night.
The Trip
Your seven-day adventure originates in Anchorage on a Friday. You’ll need to arrive into Anchorage in time to meet you 5:30 p.m., one-hour charter flight into Iliamna Airport.
Upon arrival at Iliamna Airport, you will be met by your floatplane pilot for a 30-minute flight into Royal Wolf Lodge. You’ll land in the lodge’s private airstrip within an angler’s paradise, offering access to all the famed rivers of the Bristol Bay watershed.
The staff of RWL will greet you once you are on land and whisk you to your room to get settled in for a week of unforgettable angling adventures. Your next six days will be filled with fly-outs into untamed waters, teeming with big trout, salmon and a variety of other native Alaskan species.
The Experience
Millions of salmon run through the three main drainages of Katmai National Park every summer, making Katmai an ideal breeding ground for giant rainbow trout. The average rainbow trout here ranges from 16 to 24 inches, however we do catch 30+ inch fish every year.
A typical day at Royal Wolf Lodge begins with fresh, hot coffee/tea, and a hot buffet style breakfast. After breakfast you will have time to go back to your cabin, gather up your gear, put on your waders and meet your guide at the float-plane.
From take-off, you will enjoy a brief 10-20 minute flight over the Alaskan wilderness to your fishing destination of the day. Depending on the size and circumstance of the stream or river you are fishing, you could utilize a jet boat, a raft or simply walk and wade.
Over the next 8-9 glorious hours, you’ll enjoy world-class rainbow fishing like nowhere else on earth. Around mid-day, or whenever your stomach rumbles, a delicious stream-side picnic lunch will be set out for you by the guides.
At the end of the day the plane will return to pick you up and take you back to the lodge where a sauna, hot shower, delicious appetizers and a refreshing beverage await. Leading up to dinner, most guests choose to socialize in the main lodge taking pleasure in meeting and talking with fellow anglers.
Following dinner and dessert, you will meet your guide for the next day and discuss any questions you might have. Each day you will be flown to a different unique location and get to explore incredible new rainbow waters.
Royal Wolf’s home river, the Nonvianuk, is within walking distance from your cabin. Filled with prolific numbers of rainbow and all five species of salmon, you always have another choice if weather should keep you from flying out.
Guests will have the benefit of being with each of our guides, knowing that no one knows the water or the local fish better. Katmai National Park is their home and fly-fishing Katmai is their purpose.
