The Chapelle Creek bottom provides ScatterGun with the incredible diversity of habitat protection where upland birds thrive. This place is just plain built for the hunt.

A typical hunt day at Scattergun begins with a wake up call around 8:00 a.m. A full breakfast is served before we depart for the fields.

Each group normally has their own vehicle and guides usually on a 2-1 or 3-1 basis (hunter to guide). You will hunt on 3,000 acres of dedicated, permanent and exclusive habitat managed for wild life.

Our predominant hunting style is with Labrador retrievers using the Walker and Blocker technique. Depending on the number of hunters in your group, one or more persons are assigned to act as blockers that stand strategically at one of the field while the remaining line of guns at the opposite end start walking with the dogs towards the blockers.

The strategy is to drive the pheasant towards the blockers ending in a fast and furious eruption of pheasant. Their daily limit of seven birds per person is also the most generous in the State and while most hunters get their limit by 1:00 PM lunch you can opt as a group to take more birds at $35.00 each in the afternoon.

As the shooting day draws to a close around 4:30 p.m., you will return to the lodge and have some down time before cocktail hour and dinner.

Nothing at ScatterGun is more important than SAFETY. We have never had an accident and that in large part is due to our incredible guide staff and their willingness to always be of help. We also offer a world class instruction program for shooters of all levels. At ScatterGun, you will only hunt with members of your own party and our guides to guest ratio is the largest in the business.

ScatterGun is an expansive 20,000 sq ft lodge with private-entry rooms, boot dryers, HD TVs, cozy lounge areas, top-tier meals—think oysters, wild-game appetizers, prime rib—and full bar service.

The lodge’s back deck offers sweeping views of pure South Dakota prairie land. It’s common to see deer and wild turkeys grazing, as well as strings of Canada geese flying overhead. Along with ScatterGun’s impressive bar and main dining room, the lodge offers three separate sitting areas with leather furniture for a quiet conversation or a nap.
