We've Been On A Trek Since 1972
In early 1972, journalist Bob Cloaninger set out for Honduras on assignment from a national outdoor magazine. While his editor’s instructions were to investigate Lake Yojoa’s rumored potential to yield the next world record largemouth bass, the assignment evolved into the opportunity of a lifetime for the adventurous writer.
Cloaninger’s tales of Yojoa’s super-sized largemouth bass and the fascinating culture of a small Honduran fishing village captured the imaginations of curious readers across the U.S. Friends and strangers alike reached out with questions: “How did you get there?” “Where did you stay?” “Is it safe?” “Is the fishing really that good!?”
A big idea began to germinate in Cloaninger’s mind. What if someone who knows how to get there, where to stay, how to keep safe and how good the action really is were to help others experience the thrill of adventure travel?
As no established sporting travel industry existed at the time, there was no way to calculate the size of a potential market. Nevertheless, Cloaninger was a gambling man in many ways and generally nothing would stop him from laying money down on a hunch.
In the summer of 1973, Cloaninger convinced his faithful wife Shirley to join him in securing a second mortgage on the family home. And together, the couple placed the biggest wager of their lives.
Trek International Safaris was born on the wings of a charter plane and a multitude of prayers. As those early hosted groups returned home sharing their own big bass tales, word of mouth fueled rapid growth and Trek blazed a network of trails across the globe.
Expanding its portfolio of offerings to include hunting and touring adventures, Trek first built and operated its own lodges and then shifted its model to seed our ambitious partners to develop their own programs. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the industry experienced a boom of unimaginable proportions and Trek expanded its operations into five continents.
We’ve experienced the internet’s disruption of our industry as well. While the digital age has made booking travel easier, in many ways it has made the travel experience far more problematic. A website simply has no regard for the quality of your travel experience and certainly no accountability when issues arise.
Today, Trek’s legacy is meticulously cared for by the Cloaningers' son-in-law Milton Hanburry, Jr. and daughter Cara Hanburry, as well as a very tight-knit team of highly experienced travel professionals. 4 months agoMozo and his staff provide a polite, professional, and a consistent schedule on a daily basis. Caleb and I were always treated with respect, and politeness. If we had a question or a concern it was delt with immediately. Julio is the best!! As a seasoned hunter, I know that birds don’t always do as expected. The team would always do their best to “keep the guns warm” It’s was clear that Mozo and his team know how to scout and acquire access to good fields. Always friendly, and willing to address anything that may of come up, which was rare. They know what they are doing!!

5 months agoI would honestly follow Miguel Lencina, Carlos Gutierrez, Luis Aventano and Francisco Cooreman to any destination anywhere. They are elite. Alejandro, Fernando, August, Nate, Paola, and the Chef are like family after just two trips. World class thoughtful service that avoids intrusion but adds measurably to the whole experience. The short version? Incredible high volume wing shooting paired with excellent food & beverage in world class accommodations with house and field staff that put Ritz Carlton to shame. I have dealt with Larry for years….was nervous about his retirement. Tanner, Shaun, and Miranda made sure I was well taken care of. We come to Argentina for the shooting, but I could honestly come to Guayascate and have an amazing vacation without hunting at all. How many destinations can you honestly say that about? Your staff is literally world class.

5 months agoThe phenomenal bird hunting; I enjoyed the cultural/ historical experience at Estancia SC just as well. It was a15 on a scale of 1-10. I would recommend you send all of your clients there. I think the food and beverage was far in excess of my expectations.

5 months agoThe Guayascate Lodge was the best part of the trip. Every meal was fantastic, the service was impeccable, the place settings and centerpieces at the table were amazing, the bartender did a wonderful job, the rooms were always spotless, the daily laundry was a great benefit, the facility itself was 1st class and beyond. Perhaps the best treat we had was the sausage on a bun with chimichurri sauce on top, with a warm towel for us after a VERY long day of travel. Gus and Nathan were very welcoming hosts and very professional! Really could not have been a better experience. Our flight from Atlanta was delayed, so we missed our connection in BA to Cordoba. But not to worry - Gaia arranged a last minute lunch at a nice restaurant, a mini tour of BA, with a drink at a cigar bar with great views of the city before we headed back to the airport. Really well done by her and Oscar, the driver.

5 months agoThe folks at the lodge were amazing. I have been dove hunting in the States since I was 13 and the hunting has ruined me forever. Unbelievable the numbers of birds. It was a blast and a great time with my friends. Staff both hunting and in-house were amazing.

5 months agoEverything was most enjoyable. Tanner Palmore was extremely knowledgeable, responsive to all questions, and pleasant to work with. I totally trust Tanner to work with him regarding future travels. BA was great. The meals were fabulous. Accommodations at Intersur Hotel were acceptable and what we wanted. The tours with LOLArgentina were the best (we really enjoyed Massimo Macchiavello). El Angel Lodge and DeBernardis Outfitters were outstanding - we would go back again. El Angel and DeBernardis Outfitters took great care of us. Gina DeBernardis with DeBernardis Outfitters became a new and special friend. Wow, what a good time with the staff - especially Althos, the owner of El Angel.

a year agoThe duck shooting was the best my wife Mona and I have experienced in Nicaragua. The food was very good and the hotel staff friendly and courteous. The bird boys were outstanding.

2+ years agoGreat people, great service, great time. I have traveled many places for many years, but Estancia Cortaderas was awesome. Your Staff was First Class. This was a bucket list for 20 years. I brought a friend along that had never hunted. He is hooked. That is what I enjoy about hunting in a group. If we can teach others to hunt and preserve our lands for opportunities for others. Thank you for a great experience.
