Morocco is a kingdom of wonders that has so much to offer you – four different mountain ranges march across the land, while long golden beaches line a coast that borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. In the south of the kingdom you’ll find Morocco’s most famous feature – the spectacular, mesmerizing, beguiling Sahara Desert. Traveling throughout the country you’ll find lush oases, cascading rivers, and rich vineyards: it’s truly a kingdom that rewards the curious.
Trek has designed a privately hosted nine-day, eight-night journey beginning with your arrival into the coastal city of Agadir followed by a 50-mile journey to Taroudant, which lies at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. Here, we will experience four nights and three days of driven wild partridge, hosted by Taroudant’s most hospitable couple, the de Dugas Boissonny’s at Courrier Sud. After three full days of wingshooting for the hunters and soaking in the picturesque culture and countryside by our non-hunters, we will make a breathtakingly scenic trek into the Atlas Mountains to Sir Richard Branson’s wonderful property, the Kasbah Tamadot, for a gourmet dinner and an overnight stay. Following a morning of leisure and lunch the next day, we will make our way to Marrakech, where we have two days to enjoy sights and sounds the “red” city and the surrounding Ourika Valley. Our time in Marrakech will include private tours of the medieval walled city, landmark mosques, and the public markets with a bilingual guide and five-star accommodations at Hotel La Mamounia. While it is impossible to truly see all of Morocco in one trip, we are sure you will find this finely curated experience delivers a lifetime of memories.
The Trip
In many ways Morocco is a country apart as it is nestled on the northwestern tip of Africa, separated from the rest of the continent by the towering Atlas Mountains and by the Sahara itself. Its climate, geography, and history are all more closely related to the Mediterranean than to the rest of Africa, and for this reason visitors are often struck by the odd sensation of having not quite reached “Africa” in Morocco.
The Experience
Upon arrival in Agadir, we will clear Customs and Immigrations and met by our outfitter’s staff, Frederique Hebrard and Ahmed Bouknana. Frederique will also clear any guns that group members wish to take. After exiting the airport we will be transferred 1h 20m by private coach to our accommodations at Courier Sud Taroudant.
Our hosts at Courier Sud Taroudant, Jean-Victor and Nathalie Dugas de la Boissonny, will assign your rooms and ready the staff for a nice welcome dinner. You will also be introduced to Behrouz Bagheri who will be your local host throughout your trip. Behrouz is a native Iranian, educated in the U.S., and a citizen of both Canada and France. Behrouz has been involved with several businesses in Morocco and has extensive knowledge of its culture and traditions.
After breakfast each day at Courier Sud we will depart 45 minutes to the Domain Chafarni for our driven partridge hunts. Our outfitter will make available in 4-5 different drives, 400 Gambra Partidge presented to our line of 8 guns (roughly 50 partridge per hunter/per day). A typical Moroccan lunch will be served each day inside a huge tent on the shooting grounds.
Our outfitter, Malik Laraïchi, with over 35 years of experience organizing wild bird shooting in Morocco for international sportsmen, together with a Spanish expert in driven partridge shooting, have joined to create the first Moroccan partridge shoot organization known as HAJAL ATLAS.
Our shooting area “Domain Chafarni” is our fauna & flora reserve, located at 65 Km from Taroudant, in the base of the Atlas Mountains, offering breathtaking views. It has an extension of 3.000 hectares of undulated landscape, with some fabulous valleys, combining arganiers, palmiers, mountain pines and arbustive vegetation, providing an ideal biotope for the gambra partridge. Some wild boars and the protected gazelles are also found in this area.
Parties may be formed by number of 6 up to 8 guns. Our anticipated daily bag is based on a package of 400 partridges per group, or prorated to 50 partridge per hunter per day for less than 8 guns. There will be with 3-4 drives per day depending on harvester partridge. Partridges shot and wounded are counted by the “secretarios” by loud voice and agreed after every drive with the shooter, so that total bag account is calculated by their declaration. It’s recommended to use a pair of guns / each hunter.
Non shooting guests are welcome to join the shooters daily in the field but we must know in advance so that the outfitter can be prepared. Courier Sud offers a variety of actvities including Hammam black soap scrub. steam room, massages, horseback riding, and specially prepared lunches in the gardens.
After our final day of shooting, we will journey up into the Atlas Mountains for an overnight stay at the Kasbah Tamadot. This will be a very exhilarating and scenic drive up the Atlas Mountain (weather dependent) with a stop at various sights for photos and acknowledgments.
Our adventure continues on to Marrakech, known as the red city of Morocco, where nature and civilization blend, with Berber, Andalusian, Arab and European cultural influences. The first impression of this vibrant and lively city is usually unforgettable: snake enchanters, a colorful market and a city full of surprises. We can visit some points of interest outside the Medina here, such as: Majorelle Garden, the only botanical garden in Marrakesh. Jacques Majorelle projected it and it belongs to Yves Saint-Laurent and Bergé Pierre since 1980. Enjoy a walk surrounded by exotic plants from all over he world. You can also explore the wonderful souk, the largest Berber market in the country, and stroll through La Menara, a garden located 2 km from the Jemaa el-Fna square and the locals’ favorite spot for an afternoon walk. These gardens were built in the 12th century, but the present construction dates back to the 16th century. The day can end at the fantastic Jemaa el Fna Square, a market under open sky, where the mixture of scents, songs and shows are inebriating and where the tourists and locals often merge and dine side by side.
The Accommodations
Courier Sud
Courier Sud is a small boutique hotel on the outskirts of the city of Taroudant in southwestern Morocco. In an exceptional natural setting, Courrier Sud is ideally located in the bled (Moroccan countryside) 9 km from Taroudant, precisely Freija, nestled in the heart of the Berber country, still authentic, between Atlas and Anti-Atlas, overlooking the Oued Souss. The panorama is superb and is truly an oasis of peace and comfort with discreet charm.
Courrier Sud is owned and operated by Jean-Victor et Nathalie Dugas de la Boissonny who deliver just what the guests wish, a restful stay and attentive staff. The main house is centrally located on the 15 acres of enclosed property surrounded by a lush garden. Each of the four bedrooms and two suites are spacious and individually decorated, and equipped with TV, safe, air conditioning and / or central heating. The living room, the winter dining room, the suites and two of the bedrooms have fireplaces. The 4 hectares of vines, old olive trees and young orange trees, also shelter a quarry and a large stable where sweet mares wait to go for a walk.
The cuisine, through the seasons, is tasty, refined and varied. Meals can be served where you want; harvested game of partridge, dove and wild boar can of course be cooked. All in all, the guests forget that they are customers and take possession of this magical place, with a timeless atmosphere.
Some activities include horseback riding, massage, hammam (Turkish bath), visit to Taroudant or the beautiful city of Agadir.
Kasbah Tamadot
Situated in the spectacular Atlas Mountains in Morocco, the award-winning Kasbah Tamadot was bought by Sir Richard Branson during one of his famous ballooning expeditions. To the north extends a steep river valley with sheer rocky limestone and forested mountains, contrasting with the view of the breathtaking snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains on the southern side. To the east, across the river, you can see a traditional Berber village built into the side of the mountain in keeping with the landscape. Within the grounds is a beautiful garden of specimen fruit trees, a collection of cacti and a rambling rose garden.
Kasbah Tamadot employs local Berber staff from the surrounding villages, giving guests a sense of staying in a Moroccan home rather than a hotel.
Hotel La Mamounia Marrakech
La Mamounia, a symbol of traditional Moroccan hospitality, is located in the heart of the imperial city, nestled in a 17 acre park, 5 minutes walk from the Jemaa El Fna square. On some days during the three years it took to restore Marrakech’s undisputed grand hotel, more than 1,000 craftsmen were at work on the site. Parisian designer Jacques Garcia, entrusted with returning the 1923 property to its former glory, sought out the city’s most talented painters and wood carvers. The craftsmen he chose laid millions of hand-cut tiles, pieced together wood-marquetry walls, carved ornate designs into plaster columns and forged hundreds of handmade lanterns. Thanks to them, the palace is once again a vibrant celebration of the city’s past, present and future, displaying Moroccan style, complete with intricate patterns and arabesques based on Berber and Arab-Andalusian traditions.
