Turneffe Flats provides an idyllic setting for anglers seeking to chase the dream of attaining the coveted flats grand slam. With over 28 acres of private land, Turneffe Flats is a place where you’re only steps from your boat and short runs from productive fishing each day.
You’ll go for mature tarpon on the seaward side of the Turneffe atoll and stalk bonefish and permit along an expansive system of flats. Turneffe is a truly authentic fishing lodge, providing an inviting home away after full days of fishing.
The Trip
This premier lodge has been around for almost two decades and for good reason it’s a great place to take a fishing vacation. Located some 40 miles off the mainland of Belize, Turneffe Flats is one of those timeless places that is becoming more popular. And the summer and early fall months are peak season. All trips to Turneffe Flats are Saturday-Saturday and begin upon your arrival into Belize City. Trek will be happy to assist you in making your flight arrangements.
A lodge representative will greet you and provide your transfer to the marina where you will board a 31 foot Ocean Master for the 90 minute journey to Turneffe. Sunday-Friday are six full days on the inland and ocean flats. Saturday morning, the group takes the boat back to Belize City in time to connect with your flight back to the U.S. All in all, it’s an eight day trip with six days of fishing.
The Experience
Here you can catch fish on the inland side of the island where there are mangroves and lagoons from custom 16 foot Dolphin Skiffs, or wade the classic flats on the ocean side with miles and miles of wade-able flats with hundreds of bonefish. Along with the bonefish and tarpon, you’ll also have that rare chance of hooking a permit on fly-rod. There are many who come to Turneffe just for that reason alone. Permit in the 15-20 pound range is a perfect trophy for those looking to land this rare fish of the flats.
A “Grand Slam” of saltwater angling can be had here if you are serious enough to attempt it. Guides are all English speaking and dedicated with as much as 30 years experience. You have the option of taking a hearty box lunch with you and stay out all day, or split the day in two sessions with a huge lunch and a siesta in-between.
The Accommodations
Rooms are large, tastefully decorated and you have the option of natural sea-breeze or turn on the A/C. All rooms have a panoramic view of the Barrier Reef located just off the shore from Turneffe. In fact, Turneffe Flats reserves four places a week just for divers who love to visit Turneffe Islands meaning that only 12 anglers a week fish this area.
