Trek is excited to introduce you to an exciting new flats fishing program with our long-time partner, Captain Miguel Encalada, a pioneer in skinny water fishing in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Located just 30 minutes from Cancun, Isla Blanca remains relatively untouched by development and mass tourism, owing in large part to its fortuitous location within the protected Mar Caribe Biosphere.

Spanning some 50 nautical miles from Rio Manatee (north of Cancun) all the way to Cabo Catoche (the border dividing the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico), the lagoon comprises a breathtaking network of pristine saltwater flats. While Isla Blanca is renowned as a premier juvenile tarpon fishery, the lagoon also provides a target-rich environment for permit and snook.

With daily direct flights from practically every U.S. hub and a 30-minute drive from the airport to Isla Blanca, this is one of the easiest and stress free international fishing destinations you’ll find. A Trek partner representative will meet you at the Cancun airport and escort you to the lodge, and in most cases you’ll have the entire afternoon of your first day to relax and enjoy libations on the beach.

The following morning after coffee and breakfast and each fishing day of your trip, you’ll be met by your guide at the lodge, who will have you in your panga and on the water within 15-20 minutes. Lunch and beverages are provided on the boat, and after a full day of fishing you’ll be back at the lodge to cool off in the plunge pool and enjoy some down time before dinner.

The final day, you will be transferred back to the Cancun Airport for your flight home.

Isla Blanca provides some of the finest light-tackle tarpon and permit fishing to be found anywhere.

A typical day on the water starts with casting into acres of rolling tarpon pouring out of the mangrove creeks to feed in deeper water just off the flats. Once hooked, these open-water beauties put on a magnificent display of acrobatics, with each leap revealing stunning flashes of bright silver reflecting off the morning sun.

As the day heats up, you’ll either push back into the mangroves to experience the thrill of sight casting tarpon in close quarters, or you can stalk the turquoise shallows for permit, the crown jewel of the flats.

Blanca Lodge is the recommended accommodation for this adventure. Blanca provides stunning views of the ocean and features a full-service restaurant and beach bar.

Each of the lodge’s 10 single rooms features a private balcony with a sun deck and plunge pool. Air conditioning and a kitchenette are standard in each room.

For an upgraded experience, you may also choose to stay at The Majestic, a spectacular 5-Star resort with spacious rooms and ocean-view suites. The majestic is an all-inclusive property offering unlimited food, premium liquor, infinity pools and attentive butler service.
