Imagine the thrill of battling giant golden dorado against the stunning backdrop of Uruguay’s Salto Grande Dam, a near mythical fishery that boasts 23 IFGA world records. The Salto Tailwater is where reality exceeds imagination.
Trek’s local outfitter partners have the exclusive rights to fish the Uruguayan side of the Grande Dam, granting you access to some of the largest dorado you’ll encounter anywhere on Earth and in big numbers. Just two boats a day are permitted to fish the the tailwater of the Uruguay River, known as La Zona (The Zone), an area teeming with baitfish and the river tigers that chase them.
During this elite adventure, you’ll stay at the Quiroga Suites, which is distinguished by its full-service spa and thermal-water hot tubs, which are naturally fed by the mineral-rich Guaraní Aquifer, which flows beneath the property. Horseback riding and riding trails are additional features that non-angling companions can enjoy.
The Trip
This adventure is as close to a slam dunk for trophy, bucket-list dorado as you’ll ever find, with daily catches typically topping 20 dorado per boat, including a large percentage of +15-pound fish. Fish exceeding 30-40 lbs. are common here, including the IFGA-record 50-pound behemoth landed on a fly rod a few years back.
Our Uruguay River tailwater fishery is reachable from Buenos Aires and Montevideo on direct flights from most major U.S. hubs. Upon arrival, a Trek partner representative will meet you to assist with your luggage and transfer to the lodge.
Most guests charter to Salto, a short flight of around one hour. Should you elect our land transfer, the drive is approximately 5.5 hours.
The next four days are full fishing days for giant golden dorado, with a break between the morning and afternoon session for lunch and some downtime. On your final day, you will be transferred to catch your charter flight or drive back to either B.A. or Montevideo.
The Experience
Each morning after a made-to-order breakfast in our private dining area, you’ll meet your guide at our boat launch just a few hundred yards from the hotel. The dorado in our Tailwater venue reach incredible size and number due to the large amount of food being flushed through the dam’s turbines. The unusually large biomass, or total mass of organisms in the water below El Salto Dam, coupled with a superabundance of oxygen due to the whirling of the turbines, creates a uniquely exceptional fishery.
Our dorado lord over this perpetual feeding zone, growing to enormous sizes in great numbers. The water below the dam often erupts in a jaw-dropping dorado feeding frenzy guaranteed to make your heart race in anticipation.
Our 21-foot shallow-draft fiberglass bass boats are equipped with two large casting platforms, plenty big for the double hook ups our anglers often encounter. The boats are powered with 90-horsepower outboard engines, backed up by a 15-horsepower reserve outboard.
Mid-day, we return to the hotel for lunch and some time to recharge. Enjoy a soothing soak in our private thermal hot tub or take a siesta back in your room before heading back out for an afternoon of hardcore golden dorado angling.
Each evening, we will meet up for cocktail hour and enjoy a private dinner and time to reflect and share stories of the day’s conquests.
The Accommodations
During your stay, you’ll enjoy an exclusive, VIP section of the Horacio Quiroga Thermal Spa & Resort. Each spacious single room offers views of the Salto reservoir. Your group will also have access to a private dining room with an open bar, as well as a private sitting room.
There are a number of fun activities for non-angling companions, including pampering at the resort’s full-service spa, horseback riding and hiking the area’s picturesque trails.
