Onboard the Golden Eagle
| Aug. 11, 2017
Waking in Juneau you immediately feel in awe of the majestic mountains surrounding you – this is Alaska! After a morning of browsing this quaint town, I headed down to the dock to find the Golden Eagle.
Well, seeing this beautiful 100 ft vessel across from the large cruise ships filled me with total excitement. I knew then that this would be an experience like none other.
On boarding, champagne and snacks were served. The owners and crewmembers were all ready to get me settled into my stateroom and familiarize me with the yacht. Three couple joined making our group only 7 guests for the 6-night cruise combined with five crewmembers, including a 5-Star Chef from New Orleans, this was like having my own yacht.
Our Captain and guide were extremely knowledgeable about the area and were totally flexible to our requests. On our route from Juneau to Petersburg we were able to ask the Captain to take us to any area that caught our eye, stay longer in a place and choose our activities for the day.
We kept busy by kayaking with fabulous views of a glacier, paddling by brown bear, viewing an abundance of whales very close on our skiff, exploring beaches and taking a dip in hot springs. Lots of excitement was had with laying crab pots and enjoying a feast the next day!
Some great fishing was done right off the back of the yacht as well giving us a delicious evening of trying 3-4 different fish, among them was the delicious halibut. Each meal was gourmet and Us ladies onboard enjoyed a cooking lesson with the chef and he was very happy to share his recipes.
Some afternoons were lazy just reading a book and sipping wine. Evenings were social and enjoyed time spent in the kitchen chatting to our chef whilst he prepared our meals. The experience aboard was totally tailored to our wants and needs. Our flexible itinerary allowed us to explore as we pleased and being on a small boat allowed us access to places the big boats could not.
In summary it was a great experience had by all on board and the newfound relationships will be with me forever. This was an unforgettable trip that would be wonderful for a small group of family and friends looking to explore Alaska. Trek has contracted a number of dates for 2018 and will be adding a new fishing boat to the program as an added activity. This will allow for more days fishing and other boat related activities. Call me for more details.
Returning to Trek’s “Secret” Lagoon
In the early 1980s, Trek International Safaris Founder Bob Cloaninger identified a pristine saltwater lagoon located just 20 miles north of Cancun and stacked with gamefish. The term “hidden gem” is perhaps too often used in our industry these days, but the place was such an unknown entity at the time that Cloaninger rightfully touted […]

Cordoba’s Dove Season Pause is an Investment in the Future
Cordoba, Argentina — Trek International Safaris is proud to support an agreement to a dove season contraction in Cordoba, Argentina, which all regional outfitters unanimously and voluntarily entered into last year. As a response to Argentina’s worst drought in a century in 2017-‘18, this agreement effectively pauses all dove hunting in the Cordoba province during […]

WRAPPING UP AN INCREDIBLE Nicaragua Duck and Dove Season
From the questions the Trek team received during the recent SCI shows, one may have surmised the story of the 2018-19 Nicaragua duck and dove season actually played out in the spring of last year. In Reno and Dallas, we continued to receive a high volume of inquiries about the country’s sociopolitical climate; meanwhile an […]
What You Need to Know When Taking Your Guns To Argentina
Shortly after booking his first dove hunting trip to Córdoba last year, our client Mike asked about taking his own gun with him on the adventure. We typically recommend that our clients leave their guns behind when traveling to Argentina, to minimize stress and time required for the day of travel and customs experience. Having […]
Thirty Years of Peacocking: What We’ve Learned
“Bebê!” the guide exclaims in Portuguese, excitedly pointing to the water a few meters ahead of the boat. A succession of small bubbles rise up through the root beer-tinted water, each one delicately popping as it reaches the surface. On Brazil’s Rio Negro, this effervescence is an indication of baby peacock bass schooled up beneath […]

Nicaragua’s Road to Recovery
I write to you from the beautiful city of Granada, Nicaragua, offering a first-hand report of the current situation on the ground here. In case you are unaware, this spring brought demonstrations against Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega’s government, leading to clashes that resulted in tragic loss of life. Trek Safaris has maintained a hunting presence […]
Argentina’s Fly Fishing Gold Rush
For anglers, Patagonia’s trout are unquestionably the fish species most closely associated with destination travel to Argentina. But if you prefer your sportfish with a more savage disposition capable of producing drag-melting runs and tarponian acrobatics, Argentina’s Paraná River is, quite literally, a gold mine. Golden dorado appear to have an inferiority complex about their […]
