South Africa is blessed with a varied and diverse range of wingshooting habitat particularly in the Free State and Kwa-Zulu Natal Regions that are easily accessed by flight or land from Johannesburg, the gateway city to South Africa. Here you will be immersed in the history and culture of the Boers, Zulu and British conflicts and marvel how they have transformed into a peaceful and progressive country. Normally the bird hunting trips average 7-9 days, but Trek can also arrange fabulous extended tours to Cape Town, Victoria Falls and The Okavanga Delta.

Professional Hunter Mark Haldane has been hosting Trek wing shooting and Big Game clients since 1986 and is well respected in the industry for his knowledge and contacts in the agricultural industry and how they relate to quality bird hunts. His ability to offer these hunts in unique and beautiful accommodations in close proximity to the game is also an admirable trademark. While Mark guides and hosts trips, he also operates excellent big game hunts in Mozambique, Botswana, Cameroon and South Africa from within his company Game Hunters Africa.

To reach the bird hunting areas, you will need to arrive and depart from Johannesburg where we’ll combine both commercial air and land transfers for your hunts between venues in both KwaZulu Natal and Free State. Call our licensed travel department for suggested flight itineraries.

Using 25 years of experience, our South Africa wing shooting trips offer professionally guided hunts for waterfowl like the Yellow-billed Duck and Red-billed teal in thatched blinds along small marshes and ponds as well as pit blinds for giant Spur Winged and Egyptian Geese. Those who like to shoot, our volume hunts for flighted birds like the decoying Rock Pigeon and the zig-zagging Cape-Turtle dove are sporting and numerous in the harvested grain fields. Upland species like Spurfowl and Francolin are hunted on the edges of grain fields using well trained English Pointers, while the Guineafowl are driven to hunters European style using the colorful and cultural Zulu natives as beaters and breakers.

Our bird hunts are generally customized depending on where the birds are concentrated and if the group consists of non-hunters. Generally we hunt the flighted birds near Bloemfontein and stay at the De Oude Kraal Country Estate, a 12-room hotel and spa on a Merino sheep farm with excellent food and service headed by Gerhard and Marie Lombard.

Our waterfowl hunts are headquartered from Baynesfield Lodge just outside the town of Hilton. This lakefront facility has been recently renovated and consists of five cabins and a main lodge/dining center and its own museum, a Victorian splendor built in the 19th century by namesake Joseph Bayne.

Near the town of Dundee, you will be staying at the Ingudlane Game Lodge for our upland hunts that houses guests in beautifully decorated chalets offering views of the Natal bush that is home to many indigenous animals of Africa. For those who want a break from the hunts and see some real wildlife, we have contracted the deluxe Umzolozolo Safaris Lodge and their own fleet of Land Rover’s
