New Zealand is without a doubt one the most beautiful countries in the world. With its beautiful mountains, endless streams and lush valleys, it is teeming with wildlife, and for this reason New Zealand offers incredible hunting and fishing. Given the two facts mentioned above, it is no wonder this trip has quickly become a water fowler’s favorite.

This New Zealand duck hunting trip is for six days and five nights, with four full days of hunting. The trip begins with your arrival into Christchurch, where your hosts/guide Robin and John Gemmell and their staff will meet the group and transfer you to the Riverview Lodge near Hamner Springs. The rest of the day is spent resting up and getting acclimated to the time zone. The following five days involve four days of duck hunting, with a leisure day in the middle to tour through the mountains to the seaside town of Kaikoura for wine tasting, lobster lunch and optional sea boat charter for fishing or whale watching. The last day is spent packing up and saying goodbye, and then transferring back to Christchurch for your return flight to the States.

The hunting will consist of four full days of New Zealand duck hunting, with both morning and evening shoots on the shooting days. In New Zealand it is legal to hunt before sunrise and after sunset, so expect to be up early and return a little late. All the hunting will be done over decoys, both over water and in the fields from portable blinds made of natural materials. This is also a collector’s trip for anyone who might want to bring back a couple of trophies, as we are expecting to take Paradise, Grey, Australian Shoveler, and Mallard Ducks as well as a hunt for Black Swans.

Most hunters will take home a Paradise Duck trophy, as they are only found in New Zealand and it is rated by many as one of the most beautiful ducks in the world. Please note this is not high volume shooting and an average shot should bag around 15 birds per day. Another item that will make the trip a little more pleasant is that the Lodge has a limited supply of Beretta and Remington shotguns on hand for clients who do not wish to bring their own guns.

The accommodations are first class, as we will be staying at the beautiful Riverview Lodge, located at the junction of the Waiau, Percival and Hamner Rivers. The Lodge has five en-suite bedrooms, and guests reside in comfort with spectacular mountain views looking across the valley. The Lodge is located approximately 1 3/4 hours north of Christchurch and five miles from the quaint Alpine Spa Township of Hanmer Springs. The lodge owners, John and Robin Gemmell, have operated the Lodge for bird hunting and fly fishing for over 20 years. The Lodge has not one but two chefs, whose specialties range from local wild game to delicious pastries and baked breads. Non-hunters are welcome.
